Beginning Memorial Day Weekend, Texas law enforcement officers will give additional focus to enforcing seatbelt laws as part of the state’s “Click It or Ticket” public safety awareness campaign. In the state of Texas, almost 25 percent of all vehicles registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles are pickup trucks. Pickup trucks are larger than the majority of passenger vehicles on the road, providing an illusion of added security, auto safety experts say, but they face twice the likelihood of being involved in a rollover collision which can prove especially dangerous. According to a Texas Transportation Institute safety study, nine out of ten drivers of other types of automobile regularly buckle up compared to only eight out of ten pickup truck drivers regularly buckle their seatbelts. Under new state safety regulations, the driver and passengers in both the front and back seats are required to wear seatbelts in moving motor vehicles. Safety experts estimate the Click It or Ticket program has saved more than 2,800 lives since its introduction.
